POLICE BASED VICTIM SERVICES WORKER
SUMMARY:
Provides support and practical assistance, information and referrals to clients who have been victims of crime and witnesses of crime. Ensures client's immediate needs are met, providing referrals to appropriate resources and assisting victims and witnesses with the court process or to participate in a restorative justice process.

Diploma in a related human/social service field.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Must be self-aware and have a solid support system
- Must have knowledge of services available in the community
- Must have an ability to be empathetic and set personal boundaries
- Must be able to work cooperatively within a multi-disciplinary team and work well independently
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Two (2) years recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
OTHER JOB INFORMATION:
Must maintain an authorized security clearance. Must be able to operate a PC and related applications and software programs. Must be available to attend call outs to assist members when required during shifts and or be on call on evenings and weekends when scheduled. Must have own vehicle and valid BC Class 5 driver’s license. Depending on frequency of use, must have vehicle inspected on hire and annually thereafter. Must maintain vehicle according to manufacturer’s recommendations.
VEHICLE USE:
You must have a valid Class 5 BC Driver's License. Mileage is reimbursed according to BCGEU rates.
HOURLY RATE:
$27.54-$31.61 depending on relevant experience and qualifications. 17.5 hours per week.

DUTIES:
- Must be sensitive to and respectful of cultural differences, differences in socioeconomic status and lifestyle diversity; must be non-judgmental.
- Must comply with and carry out all lawful directions given to them by the Program Coordinator.
- Assists victims, their immediate families and witnesses in dealing with the consequences of victimization due to a crime or accident.
- Offers emotional support and matches the appropriate community resources to victim’s needs.
- Educates victims to understand the criminal justice system and their rights.
- Consults with RCMP members to liaise with clients. Conducts client intake by performing duties such as obtaining demographic information and providing Information regarding the victim service worker’s role.
- Supports clients’ interests and rights by performing duties such as liaising for clients with the police, Crown Counsel, obtaining information about clients’ cases including case status and hearing dates.
- Assists clients in completing legal forms such as Criminal Injury Compensation and Victim Impact Statements.
- Provides victim assistance in the areas of court appearances, testimony, transportation and accompaniment to appointments.
